Things You Need To Know About Postpartum Depression

When a woman gives birth it is followed by celebrations.Most people think that a healthy baby and a seemingly healthy mother is all there is.Post Partum depression may happen within the first weeks and months to a year of giving birth.Research says it can also happen to men.The causes may include hormonal,environmental, psychological /emotional and genetical factors.

In some people symptoms are more severe than others.Symptoms can last for some few weeks to two years.Postpartum depression may start during pregnancy.Some of the symptoms include severe or intense feeling of anxiety leading to sleep deprivation and muscle exertion,intense feeling of sadness,loneliness,persistent crying with little or no reason,lack of appetite,etc.

Most depressed mothers complain of lack of support as the reason for their condition.Partners, family members and friends should lend their support in  avoiding and healing women who are prone to such condition.This can be done by helping her out with household chores,with the baby and creating a happy environment filled with laughter,great communication  and relaxation.

Although there are available medical treatments,prevention is better than cure.Societies where postpartum depression is common can adopt practices from Chinese and Nigerian culture.In Nigeria and China mothers and mother in laws help out with domestic activities and the baby.This goes a long way in avoiding post partum depression.
