When is the Right Time to Pierce a Baby's Ears

The video showing Stormi, then five months old daughter of American Reality Tv show personality,Kylie Jenner, wearing diamond studs earrings has resurrected the debate on the age appropriate time to pierce a baby girl's ears.

It differs in various cultures and societies and the choice is ultimately made by parents. For the black and Hispanic cultures in the United States it could be as early as some weeks to months old.Other parents who have argued against piercing of ears at very early time say that it is cruel and abusive. They are of the belief that children should be allowed to make the decision on when they would like their ears pierced and old enough to take care of the piercing on her own given the risk of earring as a choking hazard.Their children get the act done from 4 years and above.

In other climes, for instance, the UK, there has been a petition in court seeking to make the practice illegal and to set a minimum age requirement for ear piercing. In Nigeria, a baby girl's ears could be pierced few moments or days after birth.Infact hospitals offer ear piercing after birth. Most parents embrace this process and feel relieved about not getting worried on where to get her ears pierced.

It is very important that after piercing, parents should keep an eye on it and watch out for discharge, pain and bleeding. The doctor should be consulted if there is any anomaly. The earrings should not be removed for six weeks.
