A lot goes into bringing kids up, even as we expect discipline from our kids, we parents also need to learn discipline―in the area of language also. Kids are learning and imitating, those things they hear us speak or do are the things they will copy. The table below shows things you should never say to your kids and what you should say instead.
S/N | What you shouldn’t say | What to say instead |
i. | Why are you lazy? This is a hurting statement and can be classified as abuse. | You can put more energy. This statement will encourage the child |
ii. | Shut up! | Learn to listen more. |
iii. | You are a glutton | It’s better to eat healthily |
iv. | Get out of here | Please excuse me for a while I’ll call you once I’m done |
v. | You are smelling | You will need to take your bath |
vi. | You are very clumsy | Be organized sweetheart |
vii. | You are crazy I’m sure | You shouldn’t have done that |
viii. | You are a failure | You can improve on it |
ix. | Why are you daft? | I’ve told you that before |
x. | You are selfish | Please learn to share |
xi. | What did you do to yourself? | What happened to you? It is a softer way of communicating the same thing |
xii. | Will you stop crying | What’s the matter, sweetheart? |
xiii. | Stop being a baby | Please, how do you feel |
xiv. | You are a liar? | Is it the truth? |
xv. | You are a disappointment | I wasn’t impressed with your actions |
Language is power, we could learn to substitute the language we use for kids from this list, it will help model our children on the right path.
Bonne Chance!!
