That Girl Child You Have

Today is the international day of the girl child,a day set aside by the United Nations. This day highlights the different salient issues that confronts the girl child. It puts out a clarion call urging everyone, particularly the society to treat her the same way the other gender is treated, and promotes her empowerment and the protection of her human rights.

Girls play critical roles in the household and the society at large. An empowered girl contributes immensely to societal development. In most households, girls from the age of 7-18 cater for young and old family members and assist or  do most of the household chores. They make the home front comfortable for everyone to thrive.Ultimately, girls become women;wives and mothers which introduces  another level of societal impact.

Globally, girls are confronted with gender based  violence and discrimination. In most developing countries she is made to do most of the household chores, refused formal education, not allowed to inherit deceased parents property, sent into early marriage and other religious and traditional practices that impedes her progress.

Parents, guardians and caregivers should understand that the girl child is not less than the boy child, and that she has the capacity to excel and outshine anyone in any field of endeavour. When given the right opportunity such as quality education, gender equality amongst others, she brings a lot to the table. She can support her family financially, more likely to uphold the family reputation, girls are easier to handle than boys and they are the glue that holds family members together.
