How to Adopt A Child in Nigeria

It doesn't really matter who gives birth to a child; who gives a child a lease of life is the person that the child will recognize as his/her real parent.Child adoption is beneficial to both the adopter and the adoptee except in some few cases.

The Child's Right Act, 2003 legalizes child adoption in Nigeria so long as the process for adoption is made formal and lega myl.Child adoption is the legal taking over of a child’s parenting outside the child’s biological parents. This means that the child now has new legal parents; the child’s biological parents no longer have right over the child. This also gives the adopted child the same legal rights with the adoptive parent’s biological children. This also means that the adoptive parents must ensure the total wellbeing of the child.

Different reasons may necessitate the adoption of a child; a few of them are childlessness, love for a particular child, as a means of fulfilling social responsibility, need for more children etc.legally adopt a child in Nigeria this is what you should do:

  • Search for a registered orphanage
  • Visit the orphanage as often as you can, as you may likely bond with a child.
  • Ask if the child is up for adoption,if he/she is then visit the welfare office.
  • In the welfare office inform them of your intention and give them some details about the orphanage home and the child in question.
  • You need to be patient at this stage because this is where you will be asked a lot of questions which if answered honestly will bring about a successful  process.Questions such as your financial and marital status, reasons for wanting to adopt amongst others.
  • If you pass the requirements and satisfy the law as well as the officers, you will be required to visit orphanages with children in your preferred age range who have been marked for adoption.
  • After visiting these children and you decide on a child, then the paperwork begins.
  • You become a parent after paper and legal work has been completed, and processing fees paid.
