Deworming Your Children



Worms are parasites that live in the intestinal walls of the stomach. They are harmful to human health especially if they are much. They are the major causes of stomach pain and vomiting in children.


The worms that mainly infect humans are the pinworm which is popularly called threadworms, whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms. The pinworm is the most common type of worm and looks like pieces of white bread.


Our children are our special gifts, so making sure that they are healthy should be a top priority for parents. They must take all the required vaccination, however, one thing that should not be overlooked is deworming them as at when due. WHO recommends that, from two years of age, children should be dewormed every six months.


Worms can cause internal bleeding and make the child lose body nutrients. This is very dangerous to the healthy growth of the child. A child-free from worms enjoy sound sleep, speedy organ development, and growth.


If you find traces of worm in your child’s poo, it is a clear indication that the child is due for deworming. Symptoms of worms in children include; abdominal pain, frequent tiredness and weakness, weight and appetite loss, frequent urination, blood in the stool, vomiting, and diarrhea, or constipation amongst others.


These are some of the ways to prevent your kids from getting infested with intestinal worms they include; ensuring that they wash their hands with soap and water frequently, wash fruits and vegetables before consumption, meat, fish and poultry should be well cooked and kids should not be allowed to play barefoot on sand and grass. Also, to help build your child's immunity you should give nutritious and balanced diet foods to your children that include fruits and vegetables, and unhygienic foods and water are a "no-no".


If you suspect that your child's intestine is infected with worms, do not self-medicate see a doctor for proper diagnosis and medication.
