Tips on Weaning a Toddler
The weaning period can be difficult for both mum and baby.Your child has become accustomed to feeding from the breast and the taste of breast milk so of course he will cry and give you a tough time when you try to change from the breastfeeding to solid foods.You may likely get stressed as your breast may become engorged,thinking and trying different suitable alternatives and so on and so forth.That been said, it is best to start weaning your baby when he is around six months old. These tips can assist you to successfully wean your toddler.
The abrupt method
Some mothers have successfully weaned their toddlers by adopting the abrupt method. They decide to stop breastfeeding their toddlers on a day or date they have chosen. This method works best with kids who are not totally stuck on their mother’s breast.
The gradual method
You can gradually wean your child taking one day at a time by introducing activities that will reduce your toddlers demand for breastfeeding.
Distracting method
Kids are easily distracted if play is introduced, you can successfully distract your toddler’s attention from breastfeeding by introducing things that will distract him or her like play etc.
Reducing breastfeeding sessions
Be ready to accommodate the crying sessions and anger tantrums and focus on your goal to wean your toddler. Another method of weaning your toddler is by reducing the breastfeeding sessions until the breast is no longer available.
Find alternative foods
There are a so many foods and drinks that can substitute breast milk. It is best to give the child before the normal time for breastfeeding. If the child is already filled, the child wont demand for breast milk.
Get more busy
When you are stuck with work, the child will know that you are not ready to breast feed yet, and the waiting game can continue into another breastfeeding session.
Get out of maternity mood
Children are very sensitive; they understand when the game has changed. Dress more formal, wear more fitted clothes. Do not try to assist the child access to your breast and do not also refuse. One or two unsuccessful trials may discourage the child.
Breastfeeding is only for a period, once the child is of age, it is best to wean the child. You can also discuss with your kid in a language he understands. The child needs proper food at a certain age for strength and vitality.
