Get To Know Your Parenting Style and it's Effects

 Parents should interact and discipline their children in a way that will equip them to be able to face life challenges.Parenting styles matter as they shape your child's growth and development. Generally there are four parenting styles which were identified by Diane Baumrind they are;

  • Authoritarian
  • Authoritative
  • Permissive
  • Uninvolved

Authoritarian or disciplinarian parents  make the rules,enforce the punishment,they are not interested in their child's opinion and ensure that their rules and regulations are followed with total obedience.The results of this kind of parenting is low self esteem,poor academic performance, alcohol/drug abuse,poor social skills amongst others.

According to  Rogers behavioral health, Authoritative parents have rules and use consequences, but they take their child’s opinion into account. They validate their child’s feelings while also making it clear that adults are in charge. They use positive discipline strategies like praise and reward systems to reinforce good behavior.These parents are supportive,warm and responsive and they value their child's independence.The likely outcome is that your child will have great academic performance,great social skills,good self esteem,no or less mental illness and lower deliquency.This is the best parenting style recommended by psychologist.

Permissive or indulgent parents adopt more of a friend instead of a parent role,they rarely make rules and enforce them,they allow their children do what they want and do not have any expectations.The outcome is; impulsive behavior, egocentric,poorer social skills and problematic relationship.

Uninvolved parents tend to offer little or no nurturing,it is a cold, indifferent and unresponsive style of parenting.The result of such parenting on kids is ;Drugs/alcohol abuse, suicides, impulsive behaviour and deliquency.

What parenting style do you use?
