Eight Tips on Relieving a Clogged Milk Duct

A clogged milk duct is a situation where a portion of the breast does not allow for free flow of milk, it could be at the nipple area or the duct system. Breastfeeding mothers should get it treated immediately so it does not deteriorate into an infection. These tips can help in relieving a clogged milk duct. 


  1. Massage breast with a hot pad

Hot pads serve a nursing mother different purposes, to massage a clogged milk duct is one reason a nursing mother should keep a pad. If you experience a clogged milk duct, do not hesitate to massage your rest with a hot pad to ease out the clogged milk and also soothe the breast.  


  1. Drain the breast by pumping

Another method of giving relief to a clogged milk duct is to drain the affected breast by pumping it until the clogged breast pops out. Mothers note that it is healthy to feed a child with the milk lump. 


  1. Massage the breast

You can also gently massage the breast, the nipples, and the area you feel the clog until it eases out.


  1. Give the breast a warm bath with Epson salt

Epson salt should not be scarce with a nursing mother; it can also help in the eventuality of a clogged milk duct. The method is to put Epson salt in warm water and soak or bathe the breast with it; adopt any of the methods that are convenient for you.


  1. Try different nursing positions

A nursing mother with a clogged milk duct can also have relief by changing nursing positions; try different nursing positions until you find relief. 


  1. Avoid tight bras

It is not just for when you have a clogged milk duct, tight bras are not recommended during nursing; but if you have been using tight bras for a particular reason, it is advisable to avoid it if you experience a clogged milk duct. 


  1. Massage with a warm napkin 

You can warm your napkin in a towel warmer or soak it in hot water to get it warm; ring out the water and massage your breast with the warm napkin. It gives the breast fast relief from a clogged milk duct.

  

  1. See your doctor

If the clogged milk duct becomes painful and none of the home remedies applied eased it, please do not try to force it open by popping it with a pin or needle, it is best you see your doctor.
