Dealing with Common Postpartum Challenges

The postpartum period starts immediately after giving birth,it is the first six weeks after delivery and a period of adjustment for mothers physically, mentally and otherwise.Mothers should take care of themselves and be taken care of during this time. Also note that postpartum experiences can be different for every woman.

Most common postpartum challenges include:

Swelling

Swelling may occur after pregnancy and it happens on the feet, legs, face, ankles and hands. It is as a result of a residue of pregnancy fluid and injected fluids at the hospital during delivery. To deal with this you should not be on your feet for a long stretch of time, always elevate your legs and drink plenty of water.

Discharge

This is called vagina lochia, it may last for few weeks and it usually occurs with women who gave birth vaginally. It starts after delivery with heavy bleeding and blood clots but as the days/weeks go by, the flow becomes less and lighter until it stops completely. You should use good sanitary pads until the blood stops.

Urinary Incontinence

This is a situation where there is loss of bladder control resulting in the involuntary leaking of urine. For most women this will last for few weeks after delivery.Through kegel exercises this can be corrected as it helps to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

Diastatis Recti

Diastatis recti is the partial or complete separation of the six pack muscles from the stomach muscles. This condition is common and in some women it can go back to normal few weeks after delivery, while for others it can be a life long condition. However, experts say it can be corrected through special exercises.

Breast/Nipple Pain

Most women experience breast engorgement which can be uncomfortable and painful.Breastfeeding mothers may experience relief after some few days while non breastfeeding moms need to relieve the pain by using ice packs and avoid any milk expression.

Hemorrhoids

Many women who give birth vaginally experience hemorrhoids. This is a painful swelling of the vein in the rectum leading to difficulty in passing stool. It usually resolves on its own within days or weeks. To deal with this, you should eat lots of fibre rich foods and plenty water to help in the easy passage of stool, call your doctor if there is no improvement.

Make sure you notify your doctor once you notice anything unusual.

Bonne Chance!!
