Five Tips To Build Your Child’s Vocabulary


 Building your child’s vocabulary is a move in the right direction. A lot stands to be achieved by a child that has a huge store of vocabulary. The tender age is just the right time to start this exercise. The power of expressiveness, academic and career success etc are part of the gains of a child that has high vocabulary.


Research indicates that children learn fast at their tender age and they can also learn more than one language at the same time. Kids have the ability to learn up to 5000 root words between birth and when they will get to second grade in school.


Some basic tips to build your child’s vocabulary include:


  1. Engage the child with words

Teaching your child vocabulary means that you also should be good at it. As a parent or guardian, you are the child’s first tutor; learn to engage the child with words. Initiate interesting conversations, use words and explain to the child if they don’t understand it. But it doesn’t just stop there; teach the child the right pronunciation,grammar or the right usage and how to spell it.


  1. Engage your child with word games

Word games are a very fast way to build your child’s vocabulary. There are a variety or word games on the internet, books and in downloadable formats for use in your PC and phone. Engage your child with rich word games and make sure each word is repeated severally until it sticks. 


  1. Storytelling 

Storytelling is another fun way to build your child’s vocabulary. Pick an interesting story, and let your child write out the words he or she doesn’t understand, discuss these words with your child as part of your child’s glossary. Story telling also builds a child’s power of narration and description. 


  1. Reading together

If you do not read with your child, introduce it as part of your parenting. Apart from being a fun way to build your child’s vocabulary, by reading together, you can identify your child’s flaws, weakness and strength. It also builds a bond with your child and his or her confidence. 


  1. Listen to the news

Listen to the news together and let your child list all the new words. Discuss these words with your child until they become part of his or her vocabulary. Make it a regular exercise and you will be amazed at the volume of vocabulary your child has amassed. 


Children with high level of vocabulary are known to be bold, expressive, career oriented and with leadership qualities. Make building your child’s vocabulary part of your parenting activity.
