Seven Tips That Will Make Your Baby Sleep Longer At Night



Babies need enough sleep to grow; long hours of sleep is part of a baby daily needs. But we find out that babies instead of sleeping through the night wake up and cry through. Some even wake you up to play with them. Different things are responsible for keeping a baby awake in the night.

If your baby doesn’t sleep at night, it will be difficult for you as a parent to also sleep. The effect is that you will wake up in the morning flushed. That is why you have to take measures that will make your baby sleep longer at night.

  1. Create bedtime routine

Babies do not understand the hour for sleep yet, they sleep as it comes and wake up at anytime. If you want your child to sleep longer at night, you have to create a bedtime routine. Create an activity that your kid will identify with as sleeping time or close to the hour of sleep. Bedtime routines come in different forms, the most practiced by smart mothers are: bathing, feeding or suckling, singing lullabies rocking etc. 

  1. Be sure your baby is filled

Babies eat round the clock so long as they are hungry. Research has shown that most night time cries by babies is as a result of hunger. Feed your baby before he or she sleeps and your baby won’t wake up in the night hungry. Do this and your baby will sleep longer at night.

  1. Put out the lights

Bright light dissipates sleep, even adult’s sleep better when the lights are out. It is applicable to babies also. To make them sleep longer at night, you have to switch off the lights or turn them low if you have a dimmer switch.

  1. Minimize noise

Babies can be distracted when sleeping by the noise of the stereo, the radio or TV etc. It is very necessary to put out every source of noise especially the electronics to enable your baby sleep longer at night.

  1. Discourage long daytime naps

Even as beautiful as day time naps may seem, even allowing you time to do some chores while your baby naps, research points out that kids who sleep much during daytime tend to sleep less at night. So to make your baby sleep longer at night discourage too much of daytime sleep.

  1. Lay your baby on a flat surface 

Babies sleep more on a flat surface where they won’t be cramped or made to bend at awkward angles. Putting your baby to sleep on a flat surface free from all distracting toys is another smart method of making your baby sleep longer at night.

  1. Make your baby comfortable 

Kids love comfort too, and to make them sleep longer at night, you need to make them very comfortable. It can be in the form of setting the temperature right, covering them, using the net if it’s a mosquito prone area, swaddling them etc.

Kids who sleep longer at night have better growth and understanding than kids who sleep less. Let’s take measures to make our babies sleep longer at night to make them smart and intelligent.
